Sacraments
Beginning in February, Infant Baptisms are celebrated in English the first Sunday of every other month and in Spanish, on the second Sunday of the every month. A preparation workshop for parents and Godparents is required. Parents must be registered members of Assumption. At different times during the year, special classes are held for older, non-baptized children.
The sign and pledge of our communion with Christ and each other is the Eucharist. Over the course of a year, children prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, celebrated for the first time in late autumn. Following that is the Sacrament of the Eucharist when, in spring, the children receive their first Holy Communion. Parents will be asked to attend some classes along with their children and are expected to actively participate in the sacramental preparation.
Students entering the ninth grade or who have reached the age of 14 years may begin a two year preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. As the young people prepare to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in this sacrament, they will take ownership of their faith by actively learning more about their religion and by serving the parish and the community. Confirmation Candidates are confirmed in the spring of their tenth grade year. After Confirmation, the young people are strongly encouraged to remain as active parish members.
Engaged couples should contact the pastor or the deacon at least eight months prior to arranging the actual Marriage date. Couples will meet with the priest and/or deacon and a married couple who will assist the couple in their preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is readily available to anyone in need, especially the aged and infirm. Please call the priest to arrange a visit to your home or to the hospital. During the year, there may be a communal Anointing of the Sick during Mass. Twice a year, during Advent and Lent, we celebrate form II of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in a communal celebration which includes individual absolution (forgiveness of sins).
If you are over the age of 18, and have not received any or all of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, or Eucharist, the R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a year-long program of adult sacramental preparation, in which any or all of those sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil. The R.C.I.A. program usually begins in September and ends in June.
